If you need assistance to finance your study at AUT, student loans and allowances are available from StudyLink - a service of the Ministry of Social Development. While AUT provides general information, our only official involvement with student loans and allowances is to provide your enrolment and/or fee information to StudyLink when they request it, so that they can assess your eligibility. We can assist you with any enquiries relating to the information we provide.
A student loan can help to finance your study. It's made up of three parts - compulsory fees, course-related costs and living costs. You have to pay a student loan back.
A student allowance is a weekly payment to help with your living expenses while you study full-time. You don't have to pay a student allowance back. When you apply for an allowance, you will need to provide evidence of income, or if you are under 25 years of age, you will need to provide evidence of both parent’s income. You can assess your eligibility on the StudyLink website.
For allowance purposes, we will not confirm your study details to StudyLink until your fees are paid in full or your loan is approved.
Student loans and allowances take a minimum of 3 weeks to be approved and paid. During peak periods (December to March), you should allow another week for delays.
