Vice-chancellor's Doctoral scholarships: applications are open for 2011

The Vice-chancellor's Doctoral scholarships are for 3 years and each scholarship is worth approximately $96,000. Applications close Friday 24 September 2010.

What each scholarship includes

Each scholarship is for tuition fees (excluding the students’ association fees) and a $25,000 stipend per annum. The scholarships are offered for 3 years, so the value of each scholarship is approximately $96,000.

Who can apply?

Candidates who meet the admission criteria for a doctoral programme.  Preference will be given to new applicants to the PhD programme.

Applicants must have a relevant masters degree or a bachelors (honours) degree with first or second class (first division) honours. The degree would normally include research methodologies papers and an independent research project, including the writing of a report on that research.

Applicants for whom English is a second language must have an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 overall, no band less than 6.0 and normally with 7.0 in Writing

Applying for a doctoral scholarship: steps to follow

  1. Register your interest very soon by completing the online form  Submission of the completed online form will be directed to the faculty with which you wish to study.  The faculty will contact you regarding admission to the PhD programme and scholarship application requirements.
  2. Download Terms of reference
  3. Download the application form
  4. Familiarise yourself with the terms of reference – in particular the application requirements and criteria.
  5. Complete the 2-page statement outlining your proposed research in conjunction with your supervisor
  6. Source 2 academic referees, who will be required to submit a confidential report directly to the scholarships office.
  7. Provide written support from your proposed primary supervisor. If one of your referees is also your supervisor then they only need to supply one report.
  8. Submit your completed application. Send or drop into the AUT scholarships office by 4.30pm, Friday 24 September 2010.
  9. Applicants will be advised the outcome from late November to early December 2010.

PhD application process

The above process is for application for the Vice Chancellor’s Doctoral scholarship only. This is separate to your doctoral application.

If you have not already done so we recommend that you start the application process for your doctorate very soon. As this process may take up to 3 or 4 months to complete, the final award of the scholarship may be conditional on you being accepted onto the AUT doctoral programme.
