Compulsory student service fee: what it covers and why you pay it

All students – except those studying at distance – need to pay a Compulsory Student Services Fee, which helps AUT fund student services, and buildings and other facilities that you use.

2012 Compulsory Student Services Fee: NZ$395.00 (incl. GST) per full-time student

The Compulsory Student Services Fee is made up of:

  • Student services fee - $2.81 per academic credit point

Covers provision or subsidy of various services that students access.

  • Building levy - $0.48 per academic credit point

Covers maintenance, restoration and development of student facilities and buildings.

Not all students have to pay the Compulsory Student Services fee

Distance and exchange students are exempt from the fee because they do not use on-campus services and facilities. All other students must pay the fee and can borrow the amount against their student loan.

AUT invoices you for this fee at the same time as we invoice you for your tuition fees.

Services, building facilities and other items the fee pays for

Why AUT charges students a services and building fee

We used to fund these services through your tuition fees, which are partly funded by the Government at a fixed rate, for a fixed number of students. Tuition fees on their own are no longer sufficient to fund student services and facilities on top of the costs of providing high quality teaching.

The Government has indicated that it will not be boosting investment in the university sector in the future, so our only option is to ask students to help cover the costs of the services they use.
