Additional majors, minors and electives

Many AUT bachelor's degrees provide students with the option of studying an additional major, minor or elective papers from outside their chosen degree. This allows students to pursue an area of interest from a wide range of subjects.

Additional major — An additional major is an approved combination of 120 points from papers within a single subject area, with a minimum of 45 points at level 6 and 45 points at level 7.
Minor — A minor is 60 points from a single subject area, outside the student's major with at least 30 points at level 6 or above.
Minor in a language (Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, NZSL, Spanish, Te ReoMāori) — 60 points from a single subject area, outside the student's major with at least 30 points at level 6 or above.
Elective — An elective is a paper from outside of the student's prescribed programme of study.

Asian Studies

  • Available as a minor only
  • Minor must include 60 points from papers listed below including 15 points at level 7.

Chinese Studies

  • Major must include 120 points from papers listed below with at least 45 points at level 7
  • Minor must include 60 points from papers listed below with 30 points at level 6 or above.
