Once you’ve chosen your programme of study, you should apply as soon as possible to make sure you don’t miss out on a place. International students can apply directly to the University or through an AUT registered agent. The following is a broad overview of the application process. For more detailed information follow the navigation to the left.
We recommend that you submit your application at least two months prior to the semester start date. Please see application closing dates.
1.Complete the international student application form, ensuring all sections are completed in full, and that the programme of choice with major (if known) is clearly indicated. It is also advisable to fill in two other choices for study in case you do not meet entry criteria for your first choice of programme. To download the form, click the ‘Apply’ button above and choose the international student application.
Please email the International Centre to check if there are any additional requirements for entry to your programme of choice (international.centre@aut.ac.nz).
2.If you are submitting your application from overseas for the upcoming semester, and you have included all the requested certified documentation requested and it is a complete and signed application, it will take up to one week to assess. Postgraduate applications may take up to four weeks to assess. These times are a guide only and may vary according to the programme to which you are applying. Recognition of Prior Learning applications will take longer than these guidelines.
3.When we receive your application you will receive an acknowledgment email/letter.
4.Successful applicants will receive an Offer of Place letter, which will give information about tuition fees, enrolment fee, learner services levy, insurance fees, date of payment, methods of payment and a copy of the University’s refund policy.
5.To accept an Offer of Place, you must sign and date the Acceptance of Offer Form and return it, with full payment of fees, by the due date. Fees cannot be paid in instalments.
6.When your fees have been received, a receipt will be issued. This receipt must be presented to the nearest Immigration New Zealand office with a copy of your Offer of Place in order to obtain a student permit/visa.
Receiving an Offer of Place does not guarantee you a place. To guarantee your place in your programme of choice, you must pay all fees in full by the due date. Do not delay making payment as all places are subject to availability. If, in the case that all places in the programme are taken at the time you decide to pay the fees and accept the Offer of Place, we will offer you a place in the next available intake.
If you are unable to start at AUT for the semester stated on your Offer, you must apply to International Admissions for a deferral.
There are some terms in the application that you may not be familiar with. Therefore we’ve put together a glossary to help you.
