Being able to gain workplace experience at Vodafone was the highlight of her AUT business degree, says Monique Butler who completed her Bachelor of Business in December.

“My final-year workplace experience was the main highlight of my time at AUT. I was lucky enough to be offered an intern position within Vodafone New Zealand’s human resource team, spending nine weeks in the Learning and Capability Development team.

“This experience was a great opportunity to apply the theories and concepts I learned at AUT to real business situations. It took my level of comprehension to a whole new level.”

A future at Vodafone
The workplace experience is also a valuable networking opportunity, says the AUT alumna who is now part of Vodafone’s sought-after graduate programme.

“The networking opportunities during my work placement were vital, and helped me build my reputation as an upcoming AUT business graduate. Through a series of positive references and successful interviews, I was fortunate to be selected for Vodafone’s 2016 Discover Graduate Programme. I love how the programme exposes me to different departments of the business.”

She credits her AUT degree with her success.

“Vodafone’s graduate programme has an outstanding reputation and there were 1,500 extremely talented candidates for the 40 positions. Without the confidence my AUT business degree has given me, I don’t believe I would have been able to perform to such professional standards and further my career in such a rich environment.”

The passport to a dream career
Monique says she discovered her passion for human resources during her first year at AUT.

“I’ve always been a socially caring person with a huge interest in business strategy. In my first year as a business student at the AUT South Campus, I discovered how the Human Resource Management and Employment Relations major combined both these aspects.  I knew straight away this would be a passport to my dream career.”

She constantly draws on what she’s learnt in her career now, Monique says.

“I regularly find myself using tools and concepts I learned during my time at AUT. I’ve found that the skills and techniques taught at AUT apply directly to my professional settings."

Employer comment
“We were fortunate enough to have Monique join us as an HR intern during her workplace experience. She really made a lasting impression on the team. She was committed, a quick learner and demonstrated the behaviours that ensure success at Vodafone, including customer focus, ambition, innovation and great people skills. Monique is now part of our 2016 graduate programme, which is a two-year programme to build our leaders of the future. Having some experience of Vodafone during the work placement certainly helped as we already had a view on her capability and potential. We look for graduates who can take ownership of their experience, who are open to experiencing new things and take those opportunities on with passion and commitment. We want people who are curious, quick to learn, resilient and can adapt well to change.”
