Bachelor of Māori Development in Māori Media

With a passion for te reo and the media, AUT’s Bachelor of Māori Development in Māori Media was the ideal study option for AUT alumna Mahia Ponga-Fou.
“I wanted to incorporate my passions for Māori language and media studies into one degree, and the Māori Media major was perfect for that. I loved that the programme is a mix of papers on communication and media studies, and Māori development,” Mahia says.
“I would definitely recommend this programme – it fits perfectly if you’re passionate about Māori language and culture, and media studies. There is a strong focus on Māori tikanga and support, which really helped me throughout my studies. What also stood out for me is that AUT keeps up with the most up-to-date technology.”
Skills and opportunities
Students have access to numerous opportunities, Mahia says.
“I’ve had so many experiences at AUT! One of the highlights for me was being able to go on a cultural exchange to Taiwan alongside some of my classmates. Throughout my studies I also had the opportunity to work as a student ambassador, a Māori media mentor and a teacher’s assistant for the Faculty of Te Ara Poutama.
“My studies have helped me develop so many skills – including time management skills, web design, app development, self-directed learning and essay writing. I’ve enjoyed the entire programme, and there was never a time when I wasn’t excited to learn in my degree.”
A new chapter
Mahia recently returned to Auckland after a year working for Christchurch-based production company WhitebaitMedia. She is now looking forward to a new chapter in her life.
“I’m back in Auckland to finish my postgraduate studies, and will hopefully complete my Master of Arts next year.
“My first baby is due in May, and I thought it would be great idea to move closer to family while finishing my studies.”
