Studying management provides you with the skills to move into a diverse range of careers, says AUT business alumna Kate Meldrum.

“Management's wide scope appealed to me. I had always dreamt of a retail career but wanted to make sure I had the skills to progress my career and eventually move into leadership roles. Management is an area that perfectly complements other business disciplines.”

Interactive and relevant business study
When it came to choosing where to study, AUT stood out for its interactive and industry-focused approach.

“After attending other universities which had large lecture halls, I found it very appealing to have smaller and interactive classes where I know I can get more one-on-one coaching and can ask questions.

“At AUT, it’s not all about pages and pages of notes and reading, but more about how well you can interpret that information and apply it to a real business scenario.”

A highlight of her studies was spending her final-year workplace experience at The Warehouse’s Albany store, an experience that helped her land a permanent role at The Warehouse Group after completing her degree.

An exciting retail career
After graduating, Kate was part of The Warehouse’s Store Manager Development Programme for talented graduates. As part of the programme she completed placements in different stores throughout the country.

“I currently work at the company’s head office, as a customer experience specialist, looking at initiatives to improve the customer experience in-store. The platform for this role was built from my experience as a graduate joining the Store Manager Development Programme. My journey through the stores has built my knowledge to appreciate the front line of retail.

“The skills I learned at AUT were always related to New Zealand business, so once I started working in one of New Zealand’s largest retailers I could easily apply what I learned. I would definitely recommend AUT.”
