The Scholarships Office regularly receives advice from a wide range of organisations offering scholarships for study in specific areas.

Please Note: In most instances applications for external scholarships and research grants need to be submitted to the external agency through the University Research Office (URO) on the applicant's behalf. The staff there can also offer invaluable assistance on the application and approval processes. Please contact the URO directly for further advice on funding available and the application process.

Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST)
Postdoctoral Fellowships
NZ Science and Technology Postdoctoral Fellowships provide early career support for New Zealand scientists, engineers and social scientists of outstanding talent, for postdoctoral research either in New Zealand or overseas.

Technology for Industry Fellowships (TIFs)
The Technology for Industry Fellowships (TIF) Programme supports undergraduate, postgraduate diploma, masterate and doctorate research undertaken in New Zealand business.

Tuapapa Putaiao Māori Fellowships
Tuapapa Putaiao Māori Fellowships support Māori graduate students to undertake postgraduate study and research programmes at New Zealand tertiary education institutions.

Education New Zealand (International Scholarships)
Funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand, the New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships are a significant educational opportunity. The scholarships provide financial support for students from designated countries undertaking doctoral degrees by research in New Zealand universities. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit.

Education New Zealand has another scholarship they administer which is for international students wishing to complete a PhD at a New Zealand university.  Should you have any international postgraduate students who are promising PhD candidates, or if you have been corresponding with potential doctoral candidates regarding supervision available within your research group, then please feel free to bring the 'New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships' (NZIDRS) to their attention.  Further information is available online. Visit the website

Health Research Council (HRC)
These awards usually close towards the end of September each year; please confirm closing dates on their website.

Summer Studentships in Maori Health
These awards aim to introduce research to Maori students who have the potential to develop careers involving Maori health research.

Summer Studentships in Pacific Health
These awards aim to introduce research to Pacific students wanting to develop research skills with supervision and guidance from experienced senior researchers.

New Zealand Vice-Chancellors Committee (NZVCC)
The NZVCC offers a range of scholarships predominantly at the postgraduate level. Scholarships handbooks are available from the AUT Scholarships Office or you can obtain information from their website

Please note that applications for NZVCC scholarships need to be submitted to the AUT Scholarships Office and not directly to the NZVCC
