Success Story

Shizue Sameshima
Liaison Interpreter, Disability Resource Office, AUT
Shizue graduated from the Diploma in Sign Language in 1996. Upon graduation she became an educational interpreter, which she continued for two years before moving to Wellington where she completed an MA in Applied Linguistics. Shizue's thesis was on the experiences of deaf students in tertiary mainstream environments. While studying, Shizue continued to work as an interpreter, mainly in community settings on medical and employment assignments. At the beginning of March 2002 Shizue moved back to Auckland and took up her current position as a Liaison Interpreter at AUT.

"It's great to be back at AUT and seeing the interpreting programme growing every year. I have been a registered member of the Sign Language Interpreters Association of New Zealand since its inception in 1996, and held the position of Secretary of this association since 1999. Our projects for this year include a major conference to be held in conjunction with AUT and the New Zealand Sign Language Tutors Association, to be held in July, celebrating ten years of the Diploma programme. I'm also hoping to carry on with some study once I settle into my new job."
