New Zealand Work and Labour Market Institute: what we do

This page summarises our research focus, activities and goals. Side and page links take you to our specialist research areas.

What we do

We research work and labour market issues, with a focus on human and organisational:

•  Diversity
•  Participation
•  Productivity
•  Sustainability

A large research concentration

The New Zealand Work and Labour Market Institute employs 64 experts in:

•  Employment relations
•  Human resource management
•  Labour economics

This makes us New Zealand’s largest – and Asia Pacific’s 2nd largest – research concentration in those fields.

Research groups within the New Zealand Work and Labour Market Institute

We have 3 specialist research groups:

•  Occupational Health and Safety Research Centre
•  Gender and Diversity Research Group
•  Business and Labour History Group

Research that crosses boundaries

Our research crosses boundaries between work and labour market disciplines and policy areas. We integrate perspectives on:

•  Paid and non-paid work
•  People’s different life stages – from education and training, to employment, parenting and retirement.
