Research Areas:
The aim of the Interdisciplinary Trauma Research Centre (ITRC) is to support and conduct trauma research that contributes to the health and wellbeing of people living in Aotearoa New Zealand and contributes to the international understanding of trauma and health.
Trauma is a common part of human experience. The ITRC interprets ‘trauma’ as physical, psychological or cultural experiences that are extremely negative, uncontrollable, out of the ordinary and can be sudden or cumulative. This reflects the range of meanings used within the different health disciplines represented in the AUT Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences and involved within the ITRC.
The bi-cultural commitment of ITRC is reflected in the consultation, collaboration and partnership with the School of Health Care Practice Kawa Whakaruruhau Komiti and the Taupua Waiora Centre for Maori Health Research, which also sits within the National Institute for Public Health and Mental Health Research.
The logo expresses trauma as the disruption in the flow of life forces – Wairua (spiritual), Waiora (health) and Waiata (rhythm of life). Health is re-gained when these life forces are able to flow again freely without impediment, te wairere au noa.
