Overview

The Vision of the NIPHMHR is a centre of public health and mental health research excellence that demonstrates its commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and is recognised locally and internationally for its contribution to improving standards of health and to the public health and mental health knowledge base.

The Mission of the NIPHMHR is to conduct high quality public and mental health research that contributes to the reduction of health disparities, improves the health of New Zealanders and generates and extends knowledge.

Key Aims of the Institute:

  • Develop research programmes that advance understandings of the cultural, economic, social, political and environmental determinants of health
  • Inform health policy, purchasing and service delivery, and facilitate evidence-based practice for health professionals
  • Widely disseminate findings and facilitate discussion and debate of significant health issues
  • Contribute to the development of the public health and mental health research workforce, with particular emphasis on building a representative workforce
  • Develop and maintain strong links and collaborative relationships with a range of stakeholders including Māori, Pacific peoples, Asians, migrants, research centres, health provider organisations, professional bodies and other communities

Research centres and programmes

The NIPHMHR is multidisciplinary, comprising five research centres and a number of research programmes. In-depth information about each centre and programme is available by following the links to the left of this page. Although the different areas have individual names, the researchers within them work collaboratively across research projects, as required. For example, some of the current work in the Asian and the Pacific centres includes a gambling component, and physical activity and nutrition is a component of some of the Pacific Islands Families studies.

The co-directors of the NIPHMHR are Professor Max Abbott and Professor Janis Paterson.
