strength2Endurance, strength and power are important in activities of daily living as well as in sporting performance. We study how best to assess and develop these components to improve performance in many different groups, ranging from youth athletes to elite athletes. kine2We study motion of the human body during sport. We examine the mechanics of motion with respect to human performance for sports participants from youth athletes to elite athletes.

Sports Injury Prevention

Applied Exercise Physiology

Injury PreventionWe investigate areas of the ACC 10-point plan for injury prevention known as SportSmart, to help reduce the risk of injury to youth athletes to elite athletes.  Our main focus areas are injury epidemiology and sports injury biomechanics. ex physThe Applied Exercise Physiology research team focuses on determining the efficacy of novel physical training and ergogenic interventions to enhance sport performance. We focus on high-intensity and endurance exercise performance as well as intermittent team sport performance.

statsCompetitive sport presents applied scientists with unique challenges. Prof.Will Hopkins is actively researching solutions to these challenges and is a world leader in this field.  He welcomes collaboration with students and emerging researchers who have an affinity for numbers and a genuine interest in understanding and applying the scientific method to sport. anthroWe study the relationship between the size and shape of the human body and sports performance. We use internationally standardised techniques to measure athletes and use calculations of body composition, dimensions, proportion and ratio to help improve sport performance.
