Institute of Sport and Recreation Research New Zealand

The Institute of Sport and Recreation Research NZ (ISRRNZ) is a multi-disciplinary research team that conducts high impact research related to applied physical performance. Postgraduate student research forms an important part of ISRRNZ's activity and we currently have a large number of students working towards advanced level qualifications.

ISRRNZ has close links with the New Zealand Academy of Sport and Sport and Recreation New Zealand and also works with a number of national sports organisations and health providers. ISRRNZ is based in the AUT University Sport and Fitness Stadium in Akoranga, with satellite facilities at the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health in Mairangi Bay.

ISRRNZ staff work with Lisa Tamati, ultra-marathon runner


Lisa Tamati frontNew Zealand ultra-marathon runner Lisa Tamati recently visited the AUT Sports Performance Centre before tackling the most grueling foot race in the world - the Badwater Ultramarathon through Death Valley in California. This race takes runners over three mountain ranges for the finish line 2533 metres above sea level on Mt Whitney.

Dr Paul Laursen, new supervisor at the ISRRNZ

The ISRRNZ boasts another new supervisor who holds an adjunct position at AUT.

Paul is the NZ Academy of Sport North Island’s Performance Physiologist. His main role at the academy is to provide physiological support for the coaches and athletes involved with the sports of triathlon and kayak.

Strongman competition at AUT

Last month The AUT Strongman club hosted a competition, which featured some champions of the sport, as well as novices and female competitors. The events on display were the Log Press and Deadlift , where the strongmen and women attempted a single maximum lift, as well as maximum reps with a specified weight.
