Kevin joined ICDC in April of 2006. His research interests include the impact of Information and Communication Technologies upon political activism; the blurring of the boundaries between the virtual and the real; and the manner in which traditional notions of society are being re-imagined by online virtual worlds such as Second Life.
For his PhD research, Kevin will be using his Second Life avatar, archmunster Toll (see images below), to conduct a multi-methodological investigation into the interrelationship of real world and virtual world attitudes and beliefs. Such methodologies include the use of surveys as well as the more novel approaches of virtual world ethnography and in-depth interviews with avatars.
Background
Kevin earned a Bachelor of Science with Distinction in Radio, TV and Film from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, USA. Upon graduating, he began working in the burgeoning Internet industry and went on to found an online video viewing website similar to today's Youtube. He later worked for Saatchi and Saatchi Advertising as a Senior Interactive Producer and Director of 3D Production. Through his professional experience, Kevin witnessed firsthand the powerful potential of the Internet and oversaw many of the world’s most cutting edge Interactive and 3D projects. Such a hands-on background has provided Kevin with a unique perspective from which to launch an academic career.
In addition to working towards the completion of his PhD, Kevin is involved in the New Zealand component of the World Internet Project. This ICDC initiative is headed by the Institute's Director, Allan Bell, and is funded in part by the New Zealand Government.
