OVERVIEW

The AUT-Horizon Scanning Imaging Unit was set up in March 2006 by Dr Wayne Hing and Dr Bruce Allen, creating a landmark partnership at that time between an academic unit and a commercial entity. Dr Wayne Hing is the director of the ultrasound research at AUT University. Radiologist Dr Bruce Allen runs Horizon Scanning, which is a specialised ultrasound practice. Horizon is strongly patient-centred and is committed to partaking in research and teaching of ultrasound imaging.

The clinic is located in the Health Rehabilitation Research Institute, within the Physiotherapy Department. The Unit is an exciting development for AUT University and the community, and is a reference site for clinical work, research and teaching.

The overall focus and direction of the Imaging Unit is to provide Clinical, Teaching and Research Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging on site at AUT University. The Unit provides all aspects of ultrasound imaging – including obstetrics, vascular, general and musculoskeletal imaging.

The following list of current and past research projects illustrates the Unit’s scope and potential:

ACTIVE RESEARCH PROJECTS

The investigation of vertebral artery blood flow using diagnostic ultrasound during cervical spine movement and during the set up of cervical spine manipulative positions.
Dr Wayne Hing, Mike Heath (Horizon Scanning).
Funding: AUT Contestable Fund, New Zealand Manipulative Physiotherapists Association (NZMPA).
This project is investigating vertebral artery blood flow response to putting the neck in specific manipulation positions. Piloting of the reliability of the ultrasound imaging has been completed and data collection within a normal population is currently being carried out.

The investigation of normal vertebral artery blood flow dynamics using diagnostic ultrasound.
Dr Wayne Hing, Mike Heath (Horizon Scanning), Dr Darren Rivett, David Cross.
This project is investigating the imaging of the vertebral artery at clinically specific levels of its path. Piloting is currently underway.

Neural tissue mobility measurement by diagnostic ultrasound.
Dr Wayne Hing, Richard Ellis, Dr Andrew Dilley, Scott Allen (Horizon Scanning).
Funding: New Zealand Society of Physiotherapy (NZMPA).
Data collection of Phase One of this project has been completed. The results and work have been presented already internationally and a manuscript for publication is well underway. Phase Two is now well into its planning phase.

Sciatic nerve mobility – in vivo measurement by diagnostic ultrasound in the human cadaver.
Dr Wayne Hing, Richard Ellis, Dr Phil Blyth.
Data collection is under way with this project and will continue as further cadavers become available for imaging.

Shoulder Ultrasonography - Practitioner and therapist assessment and referral for imaging, diagnostic ultrasound of the shoulder girdle and the outcome and follow-up of shoulder ultrasound scanning.
Dr Wayne Hing, Scott Allen, Mike Heath, (Horizon Scanning) Andrea Marchand.
The study is evaluating the process of referral, scanning and outcome that take place when a patient is referred for a clinical diagnostic ultrasound scan. Application for ethics approval is currently underway.

The effect of manual therapy (mobilisation with movement) on impingement of the shoulder - investigation by diagnostic ultrasound.
Dr Wayne Hing, Scott Allen (Horizon Scanning), Riley Bodger, Toni Bremner.
Funding: Mulligan Concept Teacher's Association (MCTA).
The initial data collection for Phase One of this project is currently underway. This has involved the testing of pre-existing scanning methodologies and is now focused on the identification of the most appropriate dynamic ultrasound scanning method to utilise.

Clinical Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography - case study reporting.
Dr Wayne Hing, Scott Allen, Mike Heath (Horizon Scanning).
Specific case studies are being collected each week from the clinical scans undertaken by Horizon Scanning. These have been and are being categorised and stored for further follow up and analyse. Once a postgraduate student has been recruited the analysis and write up for these cases will commence.

Gene expression and muscle architecture in the medial gastrocnemius of hemiparetic children before and 6 months after Botox injection.
Dr Wayne Hing, Dr Heather Smith, Dr Kirsten Legalotz, Mike Heath (Horizon Scanning).
Funding: University of Auckland.
The reliability of imaging the muscle architecture has been completed. Ethics has been submitted and application for further funding is currently being submitted. Once ethics has been approved data collection will commence.

Associated Research Recovery Strategies in Sports.
Dr Wayne Hing, Anousith Boouaphone
Funding: New Zealand Academy of Sport (NZAS).
This research is interested in the various recovery strategies that are associated with sports recovery and injury prevention. The data collection of this project has now been completed and paper one related to 'Contrast Therapy' has been submitted for publication. Further analyses and writing for Phase Two is currently occurring.

Lower limb movement patterns and physical characteristics in adolescents.
Chris Whatman & Dr Wayne Hing.
This research is investigating the reliability of physiotherapists at assessing objective lower limb movement tests. Further analysis using 3D-motion analysis is utilised to assess these objective tests with correlation to functional movements.
