Growing up in America, Professor Trish Corner studied for a Bachelor of History at the University of Virginia. After completing a Masters of Business Administration, she taught at a community college and then at the University of Wyoming. Wanting to expand into the research side of academic life, she studied for and completed a PhD from Arizona State University. As a doctoral student, her academic excellence was recognised through induction into two honorary fraternities: Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi. She immigrated to New Zealand in 1992, taking up an appointment as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Waikato. It was here she developed an interest in small and medium sized enterprises and entrepreneurship. Enthusiastic about how new businesses can emerge out of simple ideas and a lot of hard work, Trish decided to pursue research and teaching within the area of strategic entrepreneurship. She also was the recipient of the 2001 Waikato Management School’s Outstanding Teacher Award.
Throughout her academic career, she has been a Visiting Fellow at Arizona State University in the US, and Ecole de Management Bordeaux, France. Today, Trish is a Professor of Strategic Entrepreneurship in the Faculty of Business at AUT University. She provides leadership for the faculty through overseeing research in her areas of specialisation, supervising graduate students, and serving on the management team of the AUT Venture Fund.
Her discipline-based research interests lie at the intersection of the entrepreneurship and strategy discipline, with a special interest in sustainable management topics, including social entrepreneurship and management spirituality. She has studied the founding of ventures to create solutions for disadvantaged and marginalised groups. She also serves as a trustee for the Yoga Education in Prisons Trust, a charitable trust working to rehabilitate prisoners through the well proven practices of yoga.
Trish has been a member of the Academy of Management since 1987and has reviewed for the Carolyn Dexter Awards - the Academy of Management's most prestigious award for international research. She is on the editorial board for the Academy of Management Learning and Education, an A* journal. She is currently a Research Fellow for the Australia/ New Zealand Academy of Management.
