


His research has focused on engines, vehicles, alternative energy systems, and engineering design. He shared the Premier Rutherford Award and a Technology New Zealand FIRST Award with his PhD students. Professor Raine also consults to industry, primarily in new technology evaluation and vehicle crash analysis.
Professor Raine was formerly Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Auckland and International) and Chief Executive at Massey University’s Albany Campus, and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Enterprise and International) at the University of Canterbury. A strong advocate for university-industry linkages, John Raine has led university intellectual property commercialisation activities over a 23 year period before coming to AUT.
At the University of Canterbury he founded Canterprise Ltd and co-founded WhisperTech Ltd , the HITLabNZ and the Canterbury Innovation Incubator. He later led the transition of Massey’s e-centre business incubator to a company structure.
He has served on the MED Design Task Force, participated on numerous governance boards, and in 2011 chaired the Ministry of Science and Innovation review of R&D uptake by the high value manufacturing and services sector. He currently chairs the board of REANNZ Ltd, the company that manages the KAREN advanced research and education broadband network, and is a member of the board of the committee for Auckland.
