Director of the Human Potential Centre at AUT Millenium

Professor Grant Schofield’s research and teaching interests are in well being and chronic disease prevention especially reducing the risk and eventual mortality and morbidity from obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

As such, his work tries to understand, then change, the determinants of the contributing behaviours; physical (in)activity and (un)healthy eating as well as the broader area of psychological and physical well being.

He has taken a population and settings approach to translate basic science, epidemiology, and intervention outcomes to new trials, innovative research applications and to influence government, corporate, and NGO policy.

Practising what you preach is not an issue for Professor Schofield either, he actively lives his areas of expertise. He has a lifelong passion for moving, including competing in elite sport - he was once a professional triathlete- completing over 20 Ironman events including the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon World Championships in 1995 and 1997.

To complement his work in public health and physical health he is the chair of the Agencies for Nutrition Action Scientific Committee (ANA is the umbrella group who represents the NGOs in non-communicable diseases (NCD) prevention, the Cancer Society, Heart Foundation, Diabetes NZ, Stroke Foundation) and he is a member of the Health Research Council’s Public Health committee of New Zealand.  Professor Schofield is a consultant to the World Health Organisation (South Pacific) completing several projects in non-communicable disease prevention in Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Tonga, and Kiribati.
