Bill Doolin

Bill_4870 Professor of Technology and Organisation

Professor Bill Doolin traces his interest in the social and organisational implications of science and technology to his early academic training in earth sciences at the University of Waikato. While there, he completed a Master of Science with a thesis in Antarctic engineering geology. Field work in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica was an amazing experience and a useful lesson in how much humanity has shaped the environment in other parts of the planet.

After a series of jobs in the private and public sectors, Professor Doolin returned to the University of Waikato to complete a Degree in Management Studies, before undertaking a PhD and commencing an academic career at the Waikato Management School. His PhD examined the introduction of management and information technologies in the New Zealand public health sector, the beginning of a continuing interest in healthcare management and information systems. While at the University of Waikato, Professor Doolin developed and led an undergraduate interdisciplinary programme in science and technology management.

In 2002, Professor Doolin moved to Auckland to take up the Microsoft Chair in E-Business at AUT’s Business School. Today, he is Professor of Technology and Organisation, and Associate Dean Postgraduate in the Faculty of Business and Law. Between 2003 and 2006, he was a member of a large government-funded project on the social and cultural impacts of biotechnology in New Zealand, which gave him the opportunity to broaden his interest in science and technology.

Professor Doolin is a member of the Editorial Boards of a number of top journals in organisation studies and information systems, and has been a Visiting Researcher at Lancaster University (UK), Adelaide University (Australia) and Grenoble Ecole de Management (France).
