About the Research and Innovation Office

The role of the AUT Research and Innovation Office (RIO) is to:

  • Support high-quality research activity throughout AUT
  • Develop and strengthen research partnerships in Auckland, throughout New Zealand and internationally
  • Maximise knowledge transfer and the flow of intellectual property from the University’s research and creative activities to business, industry, the professions and the wider community
We support or are involved in all phases of the research programme:
  • Identify private and public sector research partners
  • Match industry requirements with the appropriate expert team and liaison personnel
  • Facilitate access to the University for existing and potential research partners and sponsors
  • Identify funding opportunities ranging from public sector funding agencies to private sponsors
  • Help researchers formulate their research ideas and proposals
  • Provide support for responses to tenders, competitive funding awards and other funding
  • Manage interim and final contract negotiations and documentation
  • Ensure research activity complies with regulatory guidelines
  • Identify and protect partner and university intellectual property
  • Oversee reporting of research progress and funder satisfaction on project completion
  • Support commercialisation and knowledge transfer activities for AUT and partners
We also:
  • Represent the University in national strategic events such as the National Science Challenges and the Performance Based Research Fund
  • Develop and drive the University’s strategic partnerships and research initiatives
  • Report against internal performance measures and external regulatory requirements
  • Provide financial support services for research projects, consultancy and commercial activities
  • Promote the continuing growth and success of the University’s research activity
