Following completion of his PhD in Mechanical Engineering and a brief period lecturing, Professor Raine worked in the UK Engine and Vehicle Test Plant industry for seven years in product development and technical management before returning to the University of Canterbury in 1984 to teach Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Design and Industrial Management. John Raine has subsequently held positions including Head of Mechanical Engineering (1998-2001) and Pro Vice Chancellor (Enterprise and International) (1999-2004) at the University of Canterbury, and Regional Chief Executive (Albany and International) at Massey University (2004-2010). He has authored or co-authored over 100 conference and journal publications and over 240 technical research and consulting reports.
John Raine has been a member of the Ministry of Economic Development Design Task Force, the Governance Boards of the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and NanoTechnology, and IPENZ. He was chairman of the board of REANNZ Ltd, the Crown company managing the advanced research and education broadband network (2009-2015). He chaired the Performance Based Research Fund Engineering, Technology and Architecture panel in the 2006 Research Quality Assessment and was Principal Moderator for the 2012 PBRF Research Quality Assessment.
