Gwen has completed her doctorate using an action research methodology to improve pedagogical practices with undergraduate nursing students in simulation.
Of particular interest are the preferences of millennial students in the area of simulation, and simulation’s ability to entice this age group due to its immersive and technological qualities. Millennials as a generational cohort have distinguishing characteristics and preferences which make simulation a comfortable fit for this generation.
Simulation as a teaching/learning platform has the ability to improve content knowledge, skill acquisition, and communication amongst individuals and teams. However, simulation design must be informed by appropriate pedagogical underpinnings in order to maximise this learning environment.
Current Research Projects:
- Simulation and use of ISBAR reporting and digital electronic vitals (e-vitals) with registered nurses at Waitemata District Health Board.
- Flipped classrooms and the use of Camtasia™ screencasts to prepare nurses for simulated scenarios.
- Pedagogical approaches which can improve simulation as a teaching/learning environment.
