Biography:
Bernadette promotes New Zealand having the knowledge and ability to provide expert health care and excellent education. This provides the springboard for her career in nursing, the preparation of nurses for clinical practice and the education of a broad range of health professionals. Bernadette’s passion for teaching is in the human biological sciences and their application to practice in the health care professions. A background in clinical nursing, with experience in operating theatres, adult and child surgical nursing and community health nursing has provided a sound basis for working in the AUT Faculty of Health. Bernadette’s involvement in teaching began during her operating theatre experience, moving into the hospital board school education setting, then into the tertiary sector. Bernadette was one of three nurse lecturers to bring nursing education in Auckland into the tertiary sector, setting up the Diploma of Nursing programme in the then ATI and later helping this to become a degree programme. Undergraduate and Post graduate studies in education have provided a sound foundation on which to convert her vision for health carers of the future into reality through the education of students in the health care disciplines.
