Biography:

Previously 15 years as Chief Technology Officer at a medical device start-up company, leading an innovative non-invasive cardiovascular product from idea through manufacture, US FDA and European certification, intellectual property protection, worldwide licensing and distribution negotiations, and eventual trade sale.

Prior to that was at Kinetic Engineering, leading software development for industrial, multi-axis cutting robots. Graduated PhD from University of Auckland with a thesis on fuzzy logic applied to patient monitoring in anaesthesia, Bachelor of Engineering from the same university specialising in dynamics and control within the mechanical engineering department.

Research Areas:

  • Modelling of physiological systems
    • Cardiovascular biomechanics
    • Novel physical markers of cardiovascular risk
    • Artificial intelligence for patient monitoring
  • Healthcare devices and measurement systems
    • Non-invasive cardiovascular technology including ECG, bioimpedance, phonocardiography, and oscillometry
    • Textile sensing
  • Health informatics, particularly at the interface with medical devices

Research Summary:

Aim: Improving healthcare, using engineering methods.
Emphasis: Cardiovascular health, and how engineering modelling and technology can improve prevention, detection, treatment and management.
Focus: Low-cost, widely applicable solutions.
