New Zealand Council of Engineering Deans

Commitment to Quality of Student Learning

The quality of the learning experience and thus the education of professional engineers depends on the entry requirements to the various courses, the appropriateness of the learning environment, the calibre of the academic and technical staff and the requirements to obtain practical experience to supplement the academic content of courses.

The goal is to produce graduates who exceed internationally recognised standards of achievement and competencies

Quality can be enhanced by:

  • Appointment and retention of high quality academic and technical staff who are committed to quality teaching and actively involved in research and consulting work.
  • Encouraging exchanges between institutions of both academic staff and course material that can enhance existing programmes and contribute to ongoing curriculum reviews
  • Identifying and sharing teaching methods and resources which will improve the learning experience for students
  • Maintaining well equipped and up to date laboratories and computing resources
  • Ensuring library facilities and holdings including on-line access to Virtual Libraries adequately support staff and student activities
  • Working with IPENZ and ACENZ to ensure quality practical experience is available for all students
  • Promotion of the Teaching Excellence Awards and encouragement for staff to present papers at meetings of engineering educators.
  • Facilitating discipline meetings to discuss curriculum and teaching methods
  • Developing a range of awards for research projects by final year engineering students
  • Making good use of Industry Advisory Bodies
  • Engaging in dialogue with secondary schools as the NCEA is introduced to give a clear understanding of entry requirements associated with the various engineering courses
  • Engaging in dialogue with Industry Training Organisations to facilitate a seamless transition from workplace based training to tertiary study.
