New Zealand Council of Engineering Deans

Future Needs and Planning

An effective engineering education sector requires planning based on the need for engineering leadership in developing New Zealand’s knowledge economy.   There must be a match between the supply of engineering graduates and the expectations of Government, Industry and society with respect to wealth generation and living standards.   Of importance will be the number of graduates, their mix of skills and their distribution between the different levels of engineering education.

In conjunction with the main stakeholders viz:  Government, industry and IPENZ engineering educators need to formulate a policy for the tertiary education of engineers through

  • Estimating the need for qualified engineers in terms of numbers, skills and qualifications on a five year rolling basis and developing a strategy to meet this need
  • Monitoring emerging technologies and advising of the consequences for engineering education
  • Developing funding strategies and encouraging cooperation between providers to enable appropriate programmes to be developed and maintained
  • Provision of appropriate opportunities for the continuing professional development of those in the engineering sector
  • Reviewing within an appropriate time frame the success or otherwise of the planning and its outcomes and taking action on any lack of progress
