New Zealand Council of Engineering Deans

Cooperative Approach

The providers of four year professional engineering degree programmes are working together to determine ways in which cooperation between them can improve the programmes and the environment in which they are offered.   The aim is to ensure the best possible graduates are produced.   Particular actions agreed upon include:

  • Identifying transfer routes between institutions for students who have completed the first year of the four year programme
  • Defining for high school advisers appropriate mixes of NCEA modules for those students wishing to progress to a four year professional engineering degree
  • Determining pathways for diploma and certificate students into four year degrees
  • Provision of foundation courses for the less well prepared students
  • Exchange of staff for the provision of specialised options at the later stages of the degree programmes
  • Making course material available to others via the web or by other appropriate means
  • Prepare documentation explaining the roles of professional engineers and how the various programmes offered at the different institutions prepare students for these roles

The engineering education sector covers on-the-job training in industry through ITO or Polytechnic programmes, education for the technologists through diplomas and three year degree programmes and education for professional engineers in four year degree programmes.   Recognising the importance of cooperation across the whole of the sector, NZCED members will participate in the Education Forums held by the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand.
