Smart professionals can find out how university research can benefit their business at an upcoming High Tech R&D Showcase being hosted by AUT University on February 9th.

The government-funded show is the joint effort of the University Commercialisation Offices of New Zealand (UCONZ), the Tertiary Education Commission and Business NZ and will demonstrate the expertise and services that university researchers can offer business.

Seven universities will  have displays in the areas of design, rapid product development, sensing control and automation, advanced manufacturing and materials, technology and innovation management, electrical and electronic engineering, radio astronomy, sports and exercise science, and digital content.

Examples of universities working with New Zealand business include the development of respiratory devices for Fisher & Paykel Healthcare by AUT’s Institute of Biomedical Technologies and Textile and Design Lab (T+DL) as well as T+DL advice on smart textiles to Zephyr Technologies for its Bioharness. The bioharness was used in the rescue of the Chilean miners trapped underground in 2010.

Business people will be able to meet and mingle with researchers from AUT and the universities of Auckland, Waikato, Canterbury, Massey, Otago and Victoria at the showcase which will feature Medicine Mondiale CEO and New Zealander of the Year 2010 Sir Ray Avery as guest speaker.

The two hour event which starts at 5.30pm will be held at AUT’s city campus on Wellesley Street.
