Melding dance practice with theory and research is one of the challenges for the organisers of this month’s In Running Order Dance Symposium. The symposium, to be held on April 3, brings together 120 tertiary dance students from AUT University, University of Auckland, University of Waikato and UNITEC.

Senior dance lecturer and co-organiser Linda Ashley says the one-day event will use a mix of classes, workshops, forums and research presentations, run by dance staff from each of the tertiary dance programmes, to get students talking about the different strands of dance.

“The sessions will cover a range of dance genres including contemporary and ballet techniques and we will run workshops focused on choreography and improvisation in chance games.”

Dr Jacqueline Shea Murphy from the University of California and AUT University’s Jennifer Nikolai will share insights into how dance is written about and researched in the Writing Dance panel, drawing on their own experiences as published writers in journals and books.

“It will be an exciting day, encompassing dance research from a variety of perspectives, but always coming back to the integration of theory with practice,” says Ashley.

“The focus of the event is not so much on the daily dance regime but on new physical and verbal dialogues exploring the choreographic, philosophical, scientific, technological and educational elements of dance.”

The event will be hosted by AUT University and organised with support from the Tertiary Dance Educators Network New Zealand Aotearoa (TDENNZA). TDENNZA is the national association that advocates for universities and other providers of dance in higher education.
