Library workshops for staff and postgraduate students - February 2012

From 13 - 16 February 2012, the Library will be running a series of workshops for staff and postgraduate students. The aim is to aid teaching and research by giving staff and postgraduate students the opportunity to:

  • Improve database and online searching skills 
  • Learn how to manage information
  • Learn about different sources of information
  • Learn ways to keep current with the latest information on your topics

Finding Articles

Learn how to effectively search, find and manage journal articles using Summon, Google Scholar and other databases.

Learn how to:
  • confidently use search techniques and strategies
  • use advanced features of Summon to search and manage results
  • use the right database for the right time

Research While You Sleep

Are you too busy to keep up-to-date with the latest research? Do you feel that it is too difficult to keep checking the databases and websites for the latest information? Do your colleagues get to access the latest information before you? Then attend this workshop. This workshop will show you how to stay current in your field of work and research.

Learn how to:

  • re-run saved searches, automatically
  • setup RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds from Library databases and from websites
  • have the table of contents from the latest issue of your favourite journal sent to you
  • have the details of the recent articles on a topic sent to you

Uncovering Research

Around the world, much of the research conducted at universities and research institutes is now freely available on the Internet.

Learn how to:
  • find freely accessible online local and international research outputs e.g. theses and dissertations, journal articles, conference papers etc
  • use web research tools, i.e. AUT’s Scholarly Commons, Kiwi Research Information Service (KRIS), TROVE, and OAIster
  • define open access, institutional repository and harvester and discover what these mean to you

Who's Citing Whom? Tracking Research Impact

'Citation searching' is a research technique that enables you to track and rank research, researchers and journals, using subsequent citations by other scholars.

Learn how to:
  • use research tools to discover who has cited your work
  • identify influential research and researchers in a field
  • identify the highest ranking journals in a field
  • track an article forward or backward in time
  • track development of a theory over the years

This workshop will cover citation searching using Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar.
