Description: The Robert and Noeline Chapman audio-visual collection was begun in a private capacity by Professor and Mrs Chapman in the early 1960s. It later became a resource of The University of Auckland Department of Political Studies of which Robert Chapman was the inaugural Professor. The Chapman Archive now contains more than 55,000 hours of radio and television broadcasting, dating back to the 1960s. Since mid-1984 the recording of news and current affairs programmes has been continuous.
The Chapman Archive is New Zealand’s largest and most continuous collection of broadcast news and current affairs available in an “as broadcast” form. Its radio holdings are almost as large as the entire holdings of Radio New Zealand’s Christchurch-based New Zealand National Sound Archives/Nga Taonga Korero. Its continuous holdings of Insight, Focus on Politics, and Midday Report are unmatched, and even its Morning Report and Checkpoint holdings are more complete than those of the Sound Archives.
The Chapman Archive’s television news and current affairs holdings are even more extensive. The New Zealand Television Archive acknowledges that “much material up to and including the 1980s” is not archived, and that the archived material is kept “in either broadcast or selected form.”
This makes these “official” archives unsatisfactory for many research purposes. In many cases the Chapman collection is the only surviving documented record of NZ political, social and economic history, and certainly the only one combining extensive radio and television resources.
