Disability Protocol
1 Introduction
1.1 The Library is committed to ensuring that no stakeholder at AUT University Library is unreasonably disadvantaged on the grounds of impairment. This includes, within the constraints of budget, both the delivery of services and the Library's physical environment.
1.2 Equity of opportunity means that the Library views the diverse origins and backgrounds of all stakeholders positively; and that the Library should seek to become as varied a community-based environment as it can be.
2 Context
2.1 In accordance with the NZ Disability Strategy, the Library recognises that the term ‘impairment’ includes a physical, mental, neurological, sensory, psychiatric or intellectual condition.
2.2 The Library recognises that ‘disability’ arises where one group of people creates physical or social barriers by designing a world which best suits their way of living, taking no account of impairments that other people might have.3 Statements
3.1 The Library will attempt to maximise accessibility to its services and activities for all stakeholders.
3.2 The Library will promote a culture of inclusion in which people feel free to disclose impairments, should they wish to do so, and to discuss reasonable adjustments in order to promote equal participation in the Library's services and activities.
3.3 In compliance with the Privacy Act 1993, such information shall be passed on to appropriate third parties only with consent, and where there is a legitimate reason to do so.
