AUT University students made the top 20 at the SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) World Cup in Toronto this October.
The global final saw teams from 44 countries represent 1800 tertiary institutions worldwide.
New Zealand’s top team, SIFE AUT, won the chance to compete when they scooped the national 2005 SIFE title.
SIFE AUT’s eight projects, including one enabling long-term unemployed to gain work, impressed a panel of global business leaders.
SIFE is a not-for-profit global community of tertiary students from 1800 institutions. Students apply free enterprise in the real world to create economic opportunity for others and improve their communities.
AUT’s membership hails from all academic disciplines, including business, health, communications and sport.
In the two-day World Cup final, students showcased community outreach projects they designed, marketed and managed in a 24-minute multimedia presentation to a panel of 18 judges. Projects were marked on set criteria, including free markets in a global economy, business ethics, sustainability, measuring results and use of mass media and the Internet.
Senior business lecturers Helene Capner and Mark Le Fevre are academic mentors with SIFE AUT and travelled with the team to Toronto. They said getting in the top 20 in the world was a significant endorsement of business teaching in New Zealand.
“We are consistently impressed with the calibre of students committed to SIFE AUT,” says Ms Capner.
“Our team took up the global challenge with enthusiasm and vigour. The judges were business leaders from some of the world’s biggest organisations and SIFE AUT delivered a polished presentation.
“This was their first time at the competition and they achieved first runner up in their league. This is an enormous success for AUT and New Zealand and places us in the top 20 in the world.”
The SIFE AUT team were presenters Kate Massey (president), Alex Patterson (CEO), Sarah Lau (project team leader) and Jack Phattraprayoon (project team leader), with technical support from William Papesch and Rami El-Shareif.
SIFE AUT presented eight projects focusing on three areas: teaching - Networx, Marketeers, Entrepreneurship Roadshow 2005; community mentoring - Community Support, Mentoring, WorkNZ; and revenue generation - Pro-Activ Consulting Project Team.
