Faculty for Academic Studentship: Business (MBA)
Role: Academic Support
Ethnic Origin: Fijian
As a recent graduate of AUT’s MBA programme, Anare Senibulu knows the value of student support during post graduate study. It was his knowledge and experience of post graduate study that assisted him when undertaking a student support role offered through the Pasifika Academic Studentship programme. Assigned to the MBA programme within the Faulty of Business, Senibulu says his main goal was to assist students who needed help, and at the same time learn from them.
“I had some great interaction with students in terms of academic assistance; a very satisfactory feeling to help out fellow Pacific Islanders in an environment where the Pacific Island numbers are very slim”
Senibulu says he used his own networks to set up brainstorming sessions and informal tutorials for other Pasifika students during his time spent working in the Studentship role. While he says it was challenging at times, he was encouraged to see some of these students benefit from the Studentship programme.
“From my humble experience, the MBA Pacific Island students need the Studentship programme. The programme enrollment for Pacific Island students… is minimal at best”
Having gained his initial qualification (a Bachelor of Arts in Tourism Geography) from the University of the South Pacific in 1998, Senibulu spent time in the corporate sector before completing his postgraduate study at AUT in 2010.
Since graduating in July, Senibulu has turned his attention from specifically Pasifika MBA students to Pasifika postgraduate students in general, through his participation in the Maori and Pasifika Wananga Series. His role assisting in the organisation of the Maori and Pasifika Post Graduate Research Symposium was vital to the success of the event, which was held over a 2 day period in November. Having had a challenging, yet positive, experience during his Studentship, Senibulu says he enjoys tertiary teaching, and long term would eventually like to get back into working in the corporate sector.
