Te Ara Hauora Māori, the Māori Health Path allows flexibility and offers choice from Postgraduate, Graduate Certificate, Undergraduate and Certificate programmes in Māori Health. Accessible through regional courses in blocks, on-line learning and workplace based delivery.
The Undergraduate degrees Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Oral Health, Applied Mental Health, Health Promotion, Health Protection, Psychology, Sport and Recreation and Applied Science include Māori Health Development and Environment and may include Māori Health Promotion, and Applied Primary Māori Mental Health papers. Entry to degrees can be as a school leaver or as an adult with life experience, a health work background or certificate qualification from the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences certificate programmes or other wānanga. The Māori health path promotes connectedness between the student’s chosen career and Māori health. Students are supported in forming relationships with Māori stakeholders, Māori liaison services, Māori staff and Māori students. Culturally responsive elements include Māori concepts of health, Māori health providers, hui and Māori career guidance.
The Postgraduate programme is structured to allow the completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science in Māori Health which can be credited towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science, Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health, Master of Health Science, Master of Health Practice or Master of Public Health. The Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science in Māori Health enables those with a health and/or Māori development background to advance their knowledge and skills in the area of Māori health. A priority is to equip participants with knowledge and skills that will help improve the efficiency, effectiveness and quality of health sector initiatives for Māori and therefore improve health outcomes for Māori. One postgraduate paper may be studied as a Certificate of Proficiency.
