2009 AUT USA Rugby Scholarship Recipients

AUT University, through Friends of AUT Inc. and its AUT USA Rugby Fund, is supporting and facilitating positive social and educational development through the AUT USA Rugby Scholarship.


In 2009, AUT USA Rugby Scholarships were awarded to Salim Lancaster and Alex Pettiford from Hyde Leadership Public Charter School. Salim and Alex love rugby and are exceeding the level of their community expectation in sport and academic achievement.

Salim and Alex visited New Zealand for six weeks and attended Avondale College, going to classes with fellow students and training with the 1st and 2nd XV rugby teams. Salim and Alex were also immersed in various levels of NZ Rugby competition through:

  • Training with the Auckland NPC team
  • Coaching from Jeff Wilson, former All Black and 2009 Coach of the North Harbour NPC team
  • Meeting present and past All Blacks
  • Watching an All Blacks test match at Eden Park, Auckland

AUT introduced Salim and Alex to their sport and youth leadership programmes (AUT’s SHINE programme and MEN – Males in Education Now – initiative). The boys also had the opportunity to meet The Honourable Murray McCully, New Zealand Minister for Sport and Recreation.
