Ian Wilcock

Ian WilcockAs an alumnus with a Bachelor of Health Science, Ian was awarded an Alumni Association Scholarship to enable him to begin research as part of his Master of Health Science programme.

As a keen sportsman Ian wants to find out what makes agile athletes like All Black wing Joe Rokocoko match-winners, so has returned to AUT to follow a research path.

After working in the chemicals industry for 11 years he decided to make a career change. "I realised I was only working to keep the money rolling in and decided to find a career that I really enjoyed. Sport is something that I have always loved and after quite a few years of pondering I decided that I'd like a job in an area that I have some interest in," he says.

He embarked on a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation with a view to investigating agility in elite athletes at post-graduate level.

"One thing that hasn't been hugely quantified is agility. What makes agile sportspeople like Joe Rokocoko so special? What makes them different?"

During the cooperative education component of his undergraduate degree, Ian worked with the Auckland Diamonds netball team at AUT's Sport Performance Centre.

"Being in constant contact with the athletes, the lead trainers and everyone involved gives you great hands-on experience," he says.
