Explore your Career options

Your career is a journey full of opportunities, adventures, and occasional dead-ends. Indeed, you may well end up at a destination that you never imagined possible when you first started studying at AUT.

Looking back you’ll see it is clear where you’ve come from. However the journey ahead may feel less certain. Planning your career is not as simple as deciding on a job and heading directly towards it. Sometimes you’ll have a choice of routes and deciding which one is best will require thoughtful decision making. Just don’t forget that many roads can lead to the same destination.

Your career journey is a lifelong process. You’ll find change and growth are an expected part of the 21st century world of work. Participating in training on the job and further formal education is essential and will keep you ready to take advantage of opportunities, both planned and unexpected.

What do you want for your future?

Can you imagine your preferred future? What are your dreams, hopes, plans and goals? Other features to consider are your needs, values, interests and preferences. Some people are very clear about what they want to do in the future, but many are not. It’s a good investment to spend some time examining what’s important to you. Talking with a friend, parent or Career Consultant can help.

Many things influence your decisions. Some are obvious, like advice given to you by parents, teachers and friends, while other influences are more hidden. • Family/friends/teachers
  • Mentors/coaches/community leaders
  • Role models and people in the media
  • Films, TV, music, blogs, online discussions
  • Experiences you have - work, hobbies, family life
  • The society and culture in which you live
  • Your self-perception - your view of yourself
