Starting at AUT University will be a new experience that requires dedication, commitment and hard work. While some of the points below are specifically for undergraduates, most are applicable to postgraduate students as well.
Are you prepared?
Here are some things you can do to prepare yourself to be successful and get the most out of your AUT experience.
- Answer a questionnaire to find out how you study best. Try the learning styles questionnaire.
- Do you know how to write an essay? For an idea of what you might be asked to do, see sample essays.
- Learn how to study and write for AUT University by attending a free KEYS course. Have a look at the wide variety of KEYS papers.
- How much will it cost? Do a budget and put it in an obvious place so you remember to look at it. If you’d like budgeting advice and someone to talk to about money matters, contact International Student Support Service.
- Make sure you’re in the right programme. If you’re unsure or you’re having doubts about your programme of study, see one of the trained and qualified Career Consultants at University Career Services. - Spend time getting to know other students. Being connected to AUT University means that you give yourself an opportunity to build social networks. Making connections with other people will help you to feel part of our community.

AuSM website.
- Go online. It’s not all just Facebook and blogging. All AUT papers have an online aspect and you may be asked to complete tests and submit assignments online. Your lecturers will instruct you to go online once you start your course so you can receive information and support that you can access during the year. Learn more about AUTonline.
- Keep an eye on your wallplanner. You will receive an international student wallplanner at International Orientation which highlights significant dates and activities throughout the academic year at AUT University. This wallplanner advertises the International Student Support team and their contact details, what fun activities and events will be coming up, important workshops and what you should be planning for as an international student.
University study is an adventure and by completing the tips above, you can start your AUT University career off in the right direction to ensure maximum enjoyment and success.
