AUT Ngā Wai o Horotiu Marae serves as a Whānau, cultural and spiritual centre. Ngā Wai o Horotiu Marae is one of the ways in which AUT actively acknowledges the importance of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and expresses our deeply held belief that AUT is a centre of learning not only for all peoples, but also a particular place where Māori have a special and distinct role.
AUT Ngā Wai o Horotiu Marae is a place where you can stand proud.
It is a tangible sign that AUT University is a learning organisation and one that is always seeking new ways of doing and being. Ngā Wai o Horotiu Marae is the focal point that embraces the history of Māori and welcomes the many rich and diverse cultures at AUT.
The marae is used for learning, student exchanges and ceremonies. Located on the corner of Wellesley Street East and St Pauls’ Street, the marae is also known as the gateway to AUT and the city of Auckland.
Named by Ngāti Whātua, Te Purengi (the carved meeting house) refers to the ropes holding the mast of a waka in place and Te Kaipara (the dining room) relates to the body of water north west of Auckland. The designs of the marae reflect the multiplicity of interests that have come to these shores and to AUT itself, representing Māori, Pacific and Celtic values.
Recognition is accorded to Māori women through the carved central beam, the poutokomanawa, representing the repository of knowledge and sacredness of Māori women, as the wharetangata for humanity. The spirit of the marae can be found in its bold, colourful and contemporary artwork, embracing the many cultures that make up the AUT community.
