Frequently asked questions about having individual consultations with a lecturer at Learning Development and Success: Te Tari Āwhina
Why have individual consultations with a Lecturer at Learning Development and Success: Te Tari Āwhina?
An individual consultation allows you to seek extended assistance with any specific problems or issues you may have with your studies. Our aim is to teach you the academic skills and techniques you will find helpful for a University education, and to help you develop independent learning skills and succeed with your studies.
How do I make an appointment?
Individual consultations are by appointment. You can make an appointment by contacting our Administrator. You will need to provide your student ID number and contact details. Each consultation is approximately one hour long, so please check your timetable for a suitable date and time. Demand is high, so make your appointment well in advance, rather than a day or two before your assignment is due.
Appointment times
We are available for consultation appointments from Monday - Friday, 8.00am - 5.00pm. Appointments can be arranged outside these hours on request. If you are a part-time student or distance student and can only attend appointments outside office hours, please contact our Administrator.

What happens in a consultation?
Consultations are designed to identify and address your needs. Consultations allow us to work with you, and to discuss and agree useful strategies that you can apply to your studies. In an initial consultation, you can expect to discuss your immediate concerns, look at an example of your writing and work with you in addressing your learning needs. You may also be referred to other Learning Centre programmes, or a further consultation may be arranged.
We can't necessarily read and comment on your entire assignment - it depends on its length, and the time needed to address particular issues. However, they will try and cover as much as possible within a one hour time frame.
Preparing for your consultation
What should you bring?
So that we can help you, please bring these things with you when you come to an appointment
- A copy of the assignment question and learning outcomes
- A draft copy of your work - we can help you much more if you bring in a draft of your assignment rather than finished work
- As a rule, bring whatever might help us to better understand your task or problem
After a consultation
- Think about what was discussed
- What specific things were suggested or recommended?
- How can you incorporate these recommendations or suggestions into your academic work?
- What can you do to prepare for the next consultation (if needed)?
- What three meaningful steps can you take to prepare your own work?
If you need to cancel
There is a high demand for consultations, so if you need to cancel or arrange another time, please contact our Administrator, by emailing
