Māori Learning Development Senior Lecturer
Messina’s work within Te Tari Āwhina is aimed at improving tertiary education outcomes for Māori students at AUT. Messina provides study support assistance including tutorial sessions and one-to-one appointment and drop-in services, to encourage undergraduate and postgraduate Māori students to achieve at AUT.

Layne Waerea (BA, LLB, BVA)
Māori Learning Development Lecturer
Layne’s academic interests are in commercial law and the visual arts. Layne has been lecturing in the Business and Law School - on the First Year Integrated Programme and the Legal Executive course. Layne is currently completing postgraduate studies in the visual arts, exploring legal issues related to photographic imagery. Layne’s work within Te Tari Āwhina focuses on assisting students to develop the necessary academic tools required for tertiary learning. Layne can assist with academic writing, expression of ideas and different ways of problem solving in a written or visual form.

David Parker (PhD, BSc Hons)
Postgraduate Learning Development Senior Lecturer
David has a doctorate from the University of Leeds in the UK, where he studied orientational ordering and critical phenomena in micellar liquid crystals. David continued this research, using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, in a two-year fellowship at Massey University in Palmerston North. For 12 years David worked in the publishing industry as a book editor working on reference books and, more recently, on business and legal textbooks. These two sides of David’s experience - research work and writing - are brought together in his role supporting postgraduate students in all aspects of learning, research and thesis/dissertation/report writing.

Sue Beechey (BA Psychology)
Learning Disability lecturer
Kia ora. Sue’s past experience has been a mix of teaching a variety of subjects, studying psychology and then researching and teaching in the area of learning disabilities at the University of Auckland, as well as working with people who have difficulties with learning. Sue’s focus within Te Tari Āwhina is to provide appropriate support to students with a learning disability. Sue is especially interested in working alongside students to assist them with clarifying the nature of their learning difficulty and with finding ways to make their learning easier, so that they can progress towards achieving their learning goals.

Sue Bretherton (BAgSc, Dip Industrial Relations, Dip Tchg, CLTA)
Academic Learning Development Senior Lecturer
Sue has been teaching at AUT for a number of years and until recently taught on the First Year Integrated programme of the Bachelor of Business. Sue’s specialist subjects are economics, employment relations, HRM and management. Prior to joining AUT Sue worked for a number of large businesses both in New Zealand and overseas. She is particularly interested in helping students in the transition to university study and assisting them to acquire new skills, particularly academic writing, oral presentations, problem solving and critical thinking.

Robyn’s experience is in English language learning and development and she is particularly interested in academic language learning development. Vitali’s field is mathematics and Newtonian mechanics. Vitali likes working in a university environment, being part of a team, being around people and sharing in their energy and vitality. Vitali also enjoys lecturing and believes it is important to let students know that. Vitali’s goal is to help students succeed and achieve in their academic performance. Vitali believes that a contemporary lecturer must continue to develop as a professional and he looks forward to continuing to learn as he teaches.
