Resources for physically impaired students

AUT has three large campuses (City, North Shore and Manukau). At Disability Student Support, we are committed to providing physical access to all teaching areas. We can advise you regarding your needs, including parking, identifying problem areas, and seeking solutions.

If you want to park your car on campus, there are designated spaces that are available for mobility cardholders. Please display your mobility card at all times and give your car registration details to the main Reception on your first day.

Most buildings are wheelchair accessible by ramp or lift, and have an accessible toilet close by. As soon as you know the location of your classes, please contact us for more detailed information and maps.

Campus accessibility

All lecture theatres, classrooms and buildings at AUT are wheelchair accessible. Many doors have automatic openers and students who use a wheelchair have priority if there is a queue for a lift. Most restrooms on campus are also wheelchair accessible. AUT student accommodation also has wheelchair-accessible apartments and rooms.

Most lifts have doors “opening/closing” and floor voice announcements. Support and guide dogs, trained and supplied by a registered disability provider, are welcome on campus.

Support is designed to maximise your capacity to become an independent learner whilst studying at the University. Remember that the key to successful study is to plan ahead, check out the environment and resources, ask for assistance and do so at the earliest opportunity.

What support is available?

Here are some resources that physically impaired students use at the University:
  • Advice and support with campus orientation
  • Resolving accessibility issues to classrooms and buildings
  • Support to discuss your individual needs with lecturers and academic departments
  • Alternative arrangements for assessments and examinations, e.g. extra time, readers/writers, use of computers
  • The use of technology to support independence
  • Assistance and strategies for accessing lecture content and notes, e.g. notes online, access to note-taking support
