Hazard management

Please follow these rules to minimise hazards in University buildings.
  • Prior to undertaking any field study or task, undertake a Hazard Identification and Control Exercise to ensure that potential risks are managed. Your lecturers and technicians can assist you.
  • To meet the requirements of New Zealand legislation and AUT health and safety requirements, you must follow the instructions of teachers about the use of facilities, equipment and the wearing of personal protective equipment.
  • Check with teachers about allocation of space and any health and safety concerns for exhibitions. You should seek approval from teachers for all exhibitions and a health and safety risk assessment may be required in some cases
  • When you spot a hazard, assess the risk by asking yourself two questions:
  • How likely is it that the hazard could harm me or someone else?
  • How badly could I or someone else be harmed?
  • Manual handling - get help to lift move heavy items or set up large structures
  • Always tell your teacher about hazards you can't fix yourself, especially if the hazard could cause serious harm to anyone
  • Do not bring private electrical equipment into studios (AUT electrical equipment is checked annually)
  • Do not leave extension cords lying across walkways.
  • Clean up any spills of water or chemicals immediately
  • Maintain a high standard of personal hygiene
  • If you do spot a hazard, you can report it directly to your supervisor or teacher, or complete an AUT Hazard Report. The Hazard Report can be used to report a hazardous situation, e.g. broken furniture or glass, faulty equipment or an unserviceable emergency exit or equipment. Complete Section A of the form and pass it on to your supervisor or teacher, or send it to the Health & Safety Advisors at AUT internal mail post code B17.
