Trains are a cheap, fast and easy way of getting into the city from West, South and East Auckland. Trains arrive and depart from Britomart - the central city train station. It takes about 15 minutes to walk from Britomart to the City Campus. Buses also run from Britomart to very near AUT.
Note: the time to walk from the Puhinui station to the Manukau Campus is 40 minutes. Until the track is extended nearer to the City Centre and MIT as planned, train travel is not seen as a viable alternative. We may be entering into an agreement with Manukau City for the development of a travel plan for the campus.
Train fares are charged on the distance you wish to travel. 'Stages' are set at specific points along the railway line; if your journey travels across a stage then the fare increases.
Full-time tertiary students are eligible for a significant discount off train fares. In order to buy discount tickets, you must have a valid AUT student ID card with a MAXX student ID sticker applied. You will have to show your ID card and sticker when you purchase tickets and on the train.
You can get your MAXX student ID sticker and train tickets from your AuSM office:
City Campus (WC204): Monday - Thursday, 8am - 6pm, Friday 8am - 3.30pm
North Shore Campus (AS212): Monday - Thursday, 8.30am - 4.30pm, Friday 8.30am - 3.30pm
AuSM also sells adult fare tickets (if you’re a part-time student).
Cycling to the train station
If your nearest station is too far to walk, you could consider cycling to the station. A bicycle ticket must be purchased for $1 if you wish to take a bike on the train. Bringing your bicycle on board is dependent on space and the discretion of on-board staff.
Bike lockers are available at Glen Innes, Manurewa and Papatoetoe Train Stations.
