Biking to AUT is a cheap, eco-friendly way to get some exercise into your day. It's great if you live from 1 to 10km away from the University.
Cycle safety
The law requires that you wear a bicycle helmet. A white front light and flashing red rear light are also required for night riding. Reflective sashes are recommended to improve visibility.
Wherever you park, make sure you lock your bike securely - a D-lock or U-lock is best and only costs around $35. Be sure to secure your cycling accessories as well or take them with you.
If you come across a hazard on the road or have suggestions to make cycling in Auckland easier, visit:
Auckland City Council’s bikes and cycleways page.
It’s a good idea to keep a record of your bike's make and model, frame serial number, and distinguishing features. To help police return your bike in case of theft, register your bike at the
New Zealand Bicycle Registry.
On-campus cycle racks
Campus Services has installed cycle racks in front of the WA building, Hikuwai Plaza and at the end of WE building via gate 4. If you would like to comment on these facilities, please email
transport@aut.ac.nz and we will be happy to look into your suggestion.
Lockers and showers
Lockers and showers are available at the fitness centres on the City Campus and North Shore Campus. A shower gym membership (SGM) scheme is available which entitles students who bike or walk to campus to free use of showers.
Combining cycling with public transport
On the bus
Bikes cannot be taken on any bus services with the exception of fold up bikes.
On the train
A bicycle ticket must be purchased for $1 if you wish to take a bike on the train. Bringing your bicycle on board is dependent on space and the discretion of on-board staff.
On the ferries
Bikes can be carried on most ferries except the West Harbour ferries. However please check with your ferry operator to confirm as some vessels have limited space.
Bike lockers
Bike lockers are available at the following locations so you can leave your bike and gear, safe and secure.
- Northern Busway stations have both bike racks and lockers (except for Sunnynook which only has bike racks) - these lockers require a $2 coin (refundable) to operate.
- Glen Innes Train Station and New Lynn Transport Centre - lockers can be used for a maximum of 48 hours and require a personal padlock to secure.
- Manurewa Interchange and Papatoetoe Train Station - lockers can be leased for a 2 month period. A $50 refundable deposit is payable.
