Q. What’s the difference between AUTonline and Blackboard?

A. They are the same thing. Blackboard is the software (Learning Management System) we use, and AUTonline is the label we have used for the implementation at AUT.

Q. What is my login and password for AUTonline?

A. Your login and password for AUTonline are the same as they are for the normal AUT network. While you currently do have to login separately, they are using the same login details. Login details are supplied to you by IT Services, and can be checked with the IT Service Desk ph 921 9888 or contact us online via: http://ithelp.aut.ac.nz

Q. How can I change my AUTonline password?

A. Your password to access AUTonline can only be changed by changing your Novel password. This is done through the Internet login page, or by contacting the helpdesk ph 921 9888 or contact us online via: http://ithelp.aut.ac.nz, who will be able to do it on your behalf.

Q. I can’t login to AUTonline. Why not?

A. It may be that you are not enrolled in any courses that use AUTonline as part of their delivery. Contact your lecturer for confirmation of this.

Q. I can login to AUTonline, but can’t see some of my courses in the list. What is wrong?

A. There could be two reasons for not seeing a course – i) you're not enrolled in it, which could be because your enrolment has not yet been processed as far as the ‘Approved’ status, you will need to check this with your Faculty office or programme administrator. – ii) Your lecturer has the Blackboard course set at ‘unavailable’, which may be because they are not ready for you to start accessing it, no students will have access to it at this stage. Talk to your lecturer if you are concerned about this.

Q. What are the hours of support for AUTonline?

A. The hours available are 7am - 10pm weekdays and 9am - 6pm  during the weekends. Hours are reduced over the holiday period.

Q. I don’t receive the emails the lecturer is sending from within AUTonline. Why not?

A. Emails sent from within AUTonline will automatically be sent to your @aut.ac.nz email address. You will have to check this address or you can set up a redirection to your preferred email address within the identity management system. This can be done on campus through the Internet login screen, as an alternative Webmail account. Contact IT Service Desk ph 921 9888 or email http://ithelp.aut.ac.nz if you need help with this or if you are an off-campus student.

Q. How do I change my email address in AUTonline?

A. Your email address cannot be changed in AUTonline. However you can redirect your email to a personal address, this should be done from the Internet login Page

Q. What size should the pictures in my Student Home Page be?

A. Ideally, pictures on student home pages in AUTonline should be 150x150 pixels. A picture should be resized in a proper digital editor (e.g. Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, etc) before placing it on a web page; otherwise it might still be a very large file and take a long time for students to download.

Q. Timer Button issues with AUTonline Tests?

A.If you are experiencing a problem when taking your online quiz, it may be because you are using Internet Explorer 8.
When a student launches the browser and accesses a timed quiz in the course site, the quiz timer covers the SUBMIT button at the bottom, disallowing the ability to submit and complete the quiz.
If a student is using IE8, BEFORE they access the quiz, they must switch into COMPATIBILITY VIEW. Microsoft explains the benefits of COMPATIBILITY VIEW as:
Websites designed for older browsers will often look better, and problems such as out-of-place menus, images, or text will be corrected.
To switch to COMPATIBILITY VIEW:
1. Launch Internet Explorer 8
2. Login to Blackboard - Go to Tools
3. Or go to the icon and Click the COMPATIBILITY VIEW
4. Enter the course site
5. Access the quiz

Q. Issue with accessing online materials via IE (Internet Explorer)?

A. If you get an error message similar to " Navigation to the webpage was canceled " when you are using Internet Explorer to access online materials, please try the following options:
Option1: Close down the Internet Explorer. Open a new page to load AUTonline. When you come across the Security Warning, read the message carefully. Click the No button to the question "Do you want  to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely?"; or answer yes to the question "Do you want to display both secure and non-secure content on the page?".
Option2: User Firefox or Google Chrome instead of Internet Explorer. .

Q. How do I troubleshoot a download/upload problem with a file like a Word doc or PowerPoint?

A.
Be sure that your computer has been setup to properly run with Blackboard by running the 'Browser Checker' on the home/login page of AUTonline. Sometimes a file will not download due to security settings in Internet Explorer. If this is the case, try another browser such as Firefox 3.0.x. Another possibility is that you have a special character in the name of the file you're attempting to upload. Your file names should not contain special characters eg @#$%">!@#$%&* in their names. Ensure that you have a file extension eg .doc, .pdf, .xml.
