Your rights and responsibilities

If you choose to live in campus accommodation, you have the right to pursue your studies in a pleasant and secure environment. You also have responsibilities to ensure everyone else’s rights are protected. One of the most important of these responsibilities is that you understand the rules and standards of AUT University accommodation. This page gives you a clear idea of what is expected of you as an AUT University resident.

For a full description of all regulations, see University Residential Accommodation Regulations in the Residential Handbook pdf icon 7 MB

It’s our desire to provide a framework by which the residential community can live and learn together in a friendly and supportive environment, not to deprive you of your opportunities to make independent decisions. To achieve this, we have developed a set of accommodation guidelines and rules that need to be read and understood. You are strongly encouraged to check with staff members ahead of time regarding any questions, perceived exceptions, or interpretations you might have concerning these regulations.

You may also contact the Residential Life manager on +64 9 921 9647 or the Residential Services manager on +64 9 921 9847.

The Accommodation Regulations may be changed, or new ones added, in the best interest and protection of persons and property. Residents will be advised promptly of such changes and/or additions through normal channels of communication. Check back here for the most current information. Note that inaccuracies or errors can occur and residents should advise Residential Services as soon as possible if any are discovered.

Membership in the community

AUT University accommodation is more than a group of buildings housing students. It is a dynamic, largely youthful community of residential students within the larger AUT campus community. We believe students come to AUT University accommodation understanding that they are responsible for their actions and that living in a densely populated environment requires maturity and good judgment.

Residents have voluntarily agreed to live in and become a part of the residential community and by signing the Contract have already indicated that they acknowledge and will follow the rules and standards of the community as defined by the Accommodation Regulations.

Where there is unacceptable behaviour which impacts the community, Residential Services staff and residential assistants will confront residents and take appropriate action as sanctioned by the Accommodation Regulations.

What happens if your rights are violated?

Any violation of community standards is a violation of your rights and you are encouraged to make reasonable attempts to correct the situation.

If the matter remains unresolved, you are expected to report the violation to a Residential Services staff member or residential assistant (RA) who will take appropriate action.

What happens if you violate the rights of others?

It is our hope that you will not violate the standards of our residential community. However, this depends on your cooperation and your willingness to respect the rights of others and the rights of the University.

Should a resident violate the rights of others in such a way that is in breach of the Accommodation Regulations, Residential Services will activate the discipline provisions. This may result in:
  • A warning and/or reprimand
  • A fine
  • A judicial hearing
  • Eviction from University accommodation

Discipline

Our efforts in dealing with breaches of the regulations will be as consistent as possible. However, as we are dedicated to helping residents grow and develop, decisions on discipline may, on occasion, vary according to the nature and frequency of the offence. Generally, the disciplinary process occurs as follows:

Warning

A verbal warning will be given to the resident(s) involved where an offence is of a minor nature (i.e. not listed in the schedule of fines).

Reprimand

A yellow card will be given to the resident(s) involved where:
  • A verbal warning has previously been given, or
  • The offence is listed in the schedule of fines within the reprimand category

A repeat occurrence of the same offence for which a reprimand has been given will result in the issue of a red card.

Infringements

A red card will be immediately issued to the resident(s) involved and a report will be filed where:
  • A reprimand has previously been given for the same offence, or
  • The offence is listed in the schedule of fines within the “infringement” category

Residential Services management reviews the report and, if necessary, investigates the matter to determine the seriousness of any alleged breach of the Accommodation Regulations.
